What is the International Institute for Highway Safety?

The IIHS is a nonprofit organization, completely separate from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA); you’ve probably heard both acronyms when exploring a vehicle’s safety ratings. The NHTSA is a government agency that is tasked with creating official safety reports for each vehicle. They gather their results through a series of crash tests, and a single technical test.

The IIHS has a very different approach towards rating a vehicle’s safety. While they, too, conduct several crash tests, they also focus on headlight performance and evaluate the vehicle’s front collision prevention systems. The IIHS then rates the vehicle by poor, marginal, acceptable, or good. Vehicles that score particularly highly on all of their tests will receive a Top Safety Pick award.
