2019 Kia Sorento vs. 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee at Ed Voyles Kia in Atlanta, GA

SUV shoppers agree on a few things as they shop for a new vehicle. They want a large vehicle that drives smooth and maneuvers with detail, plenty of room for passengers and cargo, and they want to keep it easy on the wallet. These days, there are plenty of options for large SUV drivers in the Atlanta area, but we’ve got one of the best at Ed Voyles Kia. Side by side with the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Kia Sorento proves time and again why it’s a crowd favorite.

Exterior and Interior Features

The Sorento has been fully revamped in its newest model, offering things like a full LED lighting system and sporty rear skid plate. There are innovative “ice-cube” lights in the front that set you apart on the road and sleek chrome touches finish out the new style. On the outside of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, what you see is what you get (and what you’ve gotten for many years in the past). The new details on the Sorento really make it stand out on the road. Inside the Sorento, you’ll find lots of different ways to arrange your three rows of seating. With all the seats in passenger position, you still get 11 cubic feet of storage space. With all the seats down, that cargo space becomes 73 cubic feet. In the Grand Cherokee, you’re missing an entire third row of passenger seating and settling for just 68 cubic feet of overall space.

Strength and Efficiency

Both SUVs have an automatic transmission. The Sorento has standard front wheel drive and a regular unleaded I-4 2.4 L/144 engine, while the Grand Cherokee has standard rear wheel drive and a regular unleaded V-6 3.6 L/220 engine. In terms of fuel efficiency, the Kia Sorento will get you two extra miles per gallon on the highway and in the city. The Sorento has been noted for its stable handling. The Grand Cherokee boasts a powerful engine lineup, but has received a below-average reliability rating. Both shorter and more narrow, the Sorento still offers more space overall than the Grand Cherokee. This means that you’ll fit easier into tight parking spaces and garages, yet be able to fit more inside as you head out for the next adventure.

Safety and Technology

The Sorento comes with a lot of impressive technology and driver-assist features like automatic climate control, a heated steering wheel, a power liftgate and 630-watt ten-speaker sound system. The dual-pane sunroof gives you and your passengers a window to the world outside. Four-wheel drive lock mode helps power circulate evenly among the front and rear axles and smooth driving is ensured no matter what with a torque vectoring cornering control system. Smart Shift and Drive mode tracks your driving behavior to help adjust to your surroundings automatically, from calm highway cruising to intense maneuvers. As a Jeep, the Grand Cherokee is equipped for heading off-road. Ultimately, however, there aren’t any extra safety or efficiency features in the Grand Cherokee that aren’t found in the Sorento.
